UPCYCLED INGREDIENTS IN SKINCARE FORMULATION

Rice Bran

One person’s trash is another’s person’s treasure! Sustainability and promoting a circular economy are hugely important to us when selecting the ingredients to use in our skincare formulation.

What is upcycling in the beauty industry?

Upcycling is the process of transforming by-products and waste materials into new products. Food and beverage waste represent the main source of materials that can be upcycled into beauty products, particularly into natural cosmetics as these often contain food-grade ingredients that contain rich properties that can be used on the skin.

What materials can be upcycled into cosmetics?

There is a wide range of food waste that can be used to develop upcycled natural beauty products such as olive oil waste, citrus extracts, coffee and cacao beans waste etc. Dried fruit seeds discarded from the juice and jam industries can also be cold pressed and transformed into essential oils.

Product focus – What is rice bran?

Rice Bran Oil (Oryza sativa used in our Illuminate Range) is derived from the hard, outer layer of rice—the bran. Bran is a by-product of rice production and after being harvested, the bran is either pressed by hand or cold pressed through machinery to obtain the oil.

What are the benefits?

Rice Bran contains high levels of Vitamins B and E, and is an excellent hydrator and anti-ager. It also contains squalene, which occurs naturally in human sebum so is well tolerated by the skin and helps restore hydration. Gamma-oryzanol, a rare component, particularly helps promote circulation to effectively even skin tone.

What type of skin benefits most from Rice Bran?

All skin types! It’s especially suitable for skin that’s sensitive or prone to redness due to its calming properties.
